Another bright idea from HATS

(Hawkhurst Amateur Theatrical Society)

One Kent theatre group has come up with a way for locals to enjoy a night out

with food, drink and laughter – all for a tenner.

HATS' (Hawkhurst Amateur Theatrical Society) summer production of

Peter Shaffer’s 1960s Black Comedy is being staged at the

Marlborough House School Theatre in Hawkhurst on Thursday May 28, Friday May 29 and Saturday May 30.

This one act farce has entertained audiences for more than 40 years

and has lost none of its sparkle. Brindsley Miller has, at last, got a grip on

his chaotic existence:  If all goes well, this very night will put an end to his

single, carefree, poor-artist-style life. A world famous art collector, is

coming to buy some of his works. Deeply impressed, the father of his fiancée

will give consent to their marriage, and everybody will live happily ever after.

One simple fuse is all it takes to turn Brindsley’s night-of-his-life into a hilarious

roller-coaster nightmare. Witness the devastating powers of Murphy’s Law

in action as the lights go downand the artist’s past returns with a vengeance.

For the Thursday night show tickets are just £5 for anyone coming to enjoy the

one-act play, while tickets for the Friday and Saturday performances are £10,

which includes a pre-show ploughman’s supper and glass of wine, or soft drink,

before the show.

HATS' chairman Kris Robertson said: “We have set the theatre up with cabaret

style seating at tables for the Friday and Saturday shows so people can enjoy a sociable meal before the play. And the £10 all-in-one ticket price reflects these

credit crunch times.”

Tickets are on sale from Jempsons supermarket, Hawkhurst and from Woods the butchers, The Moor, Hawkhurst, or call 07743 40 49 55. The Thursday evening performance starts at 8pm, while the pre-show supper will be served from

7.30pm on the Friday and Saturday evenings.

Panto Writer Pays HATS a Visit.

The cast of HATS' 2008 Christmas production of 'ROBIN HOOD - The Panto' were honoured to have the Pantomime's writer, Michael Buchanan-Smart as a surprise guest for the Saturday evening performance.  Director Aaron Smith brought Mr Buchanan-Smart on stage to rapturous applause from the appreciative

Hawkhurst audience, whilst cast members gasped and collected their jaws

from the stage floor.

The acclaimed Pantomime author, who has penned upwards of 17 adaptations

of well-known stories, was full of praise for HATS' first production admiting

that he was impressed that the society had started with such a large production.

In front of the sell-out crowd, the author complimented the cast on a fantastic

show and urged the audience to continue to show their support for HATS in

the future.

Mr Buchanan-Smart, who travelled up from Canterbury, stayed behind after the

show to thank the cast, wishing them well with all future productions.

HATS off to New Drama Group

Families in Hawkhurst have a treat to look forward to as rehearsals have begun

for the first Christmas pantomime from a newly formed drama group in the village.

Hawkhurst Amateur Theatrical Society was launched in September and already

has more than 20 members.  The first production will be Robin Hood, the

pantomime, which will be staged in the school theatre at Marlborough House

School in the village.

Kris Robertson, Chairman of HATS, said: “We’re very excited about this new

venture for the village, which used to have an excellent theatre group that

sadly ceased some years ago.

We’ve chosen a family-friendly panto for our first production and our aim is

for the audience to enjoy Robin Hood just as much as we enjoy putting it on.

We promise there will be lots more productions in years to come.

There’s a lot of talent in Hawkhurst and the group already has a wealth of experienced actors as members, as well as some enthusiastic newcomers.

Whether you fancy yourself as a leading lady or man, or you’d just like to

help paint the scenery or sew costumes, new members are welcome to come

along and meet us.”

HATS meets on Wednesday evenings from 7.30pm at

Marlborough House School, Hawkhurst, Kent.
